Mendeley: a review

2011-11-15 17:01:27 , by Adriaan Bisschop Email , 813 views, Applied Sciences,

Text: Karin Clavel

What is Mendeley?

Mendeley is a (free) web service for online reference management & reference sharing. With Mendeley you can easily store references to papers, books or even websites. You can work with the web-based version, which comes with a handy bookmarklet to instantly add references to your Mendeley Library without typing. Alternatively, you can install Mendeley Desktop and add references by simply dragging and dropping PDFs. You could also create a watch folder; any PDF added to the watch folder will be imported into your library.

The references and even the PDFs can be backed up online, with 1GB storage for free. This also allows you to access your library from any computer and even from your iPhone or iPad. If the storage is not enough, you can move to a paid premium account, or you could set up Dropbox  as your storage file.

Mendeley automatically fills in important information, such as authors, titles, journal, abstract, keywords and also the URL or the full text PDF.

Collaboration and academic networking

You can create a public or private group and invite the people you work with to share your references, but also annotations, tags and notes. The service will keep track of the activity within the group. You can join existing public groups and get in contact with people with a similar research interest worldwide.

Self service upload of data sets to 3TU.Datacentrum

2011-06-20 11:35:28 , by Adriaan Bisschop Email , 1439 views, Applied Sciences, TU Delft Library,
From now on you can upload your research data to 3TU.Datacentrum yourself. This provides long-term storage for your data in our archive and enables you to share your data with colleagues/fellow researchers.

Why you should upload to the 3TU.Datacentrum

3TU.Datacentrum offers long-term storage and management of data sets and provides professional support. The data sets are supplied with all the information that is essential for sustainable data management.
We ensure that only authorised users can download data sets. The quality of our service provision meets international standards and guidelines for digital archiving.

Storing your data sets in our archive has the following advantages:

  • The data are stored safely and sustainably and so remain permanently accessible.
  • The data sets are allocated descriptive metadata in accordance with international standards.
  • The data can be easily shared with others via a permanent link.
  • The data sets can be assigned a DOI, which is ideal for citation.
  • The formats in which the data are stored remain legible.
  • You determine whether and/or when to make your data available to others.

How to publicise your data set on 3TU.Datacentrum

You can upload data sets up to 1 GB via the upload form. Staff at Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences can log in using their NetID.

Other people can log in using an OpenID, such as a Google account.
Once you have logged in, a personal page will be created for you. You can see on this page how much use is made of your data sets.

If your data set is larger than 1 GB or if you have several sets or sets in NetCDF, please contact library@tudelft.nl.

Conditions for publication

When you upload a data set, it is checked before inclusion. This is to ensure that no errors have been made. After three days your data set will appear in 3TU.Datacentrum.

About 3TU.Datacentrum

Since 2008, TU Delft Library has been collaborating with the libraries of Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Twente to set up the 3TU.Datacentrum, an archive for research data. The aim of the data centre is to provide the scientific community with a permanently accessible sustainable archive of technical-scientific research data for reuse.

For this reason the 3TU.Datacentrum warmly welcomes your contributions of data sets containing technical-scientific data.

SciFinder as of April 1, 2011, only accessible through the SciFinder WEB interface

2011-04-01 16:08:54 , by Adriaan Bisschop Email , 3387 views, Applied Sciences, Life Science & Technology, TU Delft Library, Molecular Science & Technology,

TU Delft has increased its SciFinder access as of April 1, 2011; the given link can be followed by users who already have a SciFinder webaccount. As a result, from that date SciFinder can only be accessed through the SciFinder web interface, meaning that access through the client interface is not possible anymore. The number of ports has been increased.

With this conversion also the substructure search possibility has become available, a feature which could not be used by TU Delft before. The expectation is that the connection capacity with SciFinder will be improved strongly. Users who do not have a SciFinder webaccount yet please follow this link to register and set up the account.
